Got a 2004 VW Rolf R32 in on a trade, blue with black leather, obviously 6spd AWD.... doesn't look like its been beat on and its condition is FANTASTIC. No dents anywhere, its got the invisible bra installed on the front, car is MINT. 31K miles on the odometer, its got a Magnaflow catback system on it that is pure sex.
I usually don't take cars on extended test drives, but this I wanted to see. Its a such a drivers car it amazed me. They are asking 22.9k for it and it just showed up at the dealership. Its not a EVO killer or anything, but man is it a joy to drive. It beats the EVO hands down in daily driving. Top end power is not as good as a EVO, but low end is incredible and engine is very responsive. Grzesiu told me to try a 6K RPM launch on it, well I wasn't bout to leave the AWD behind me on the ground so I tried 5K RPM- this thing spun all 4 and just took off like a bat out of hell. Crazy ass VW, loved it loved it loved it...... so much whole time I was driving it I was saying to myself DO NOT BUY IT.
I can't belive I am writting this about A VW, but the car is awesome.
I drove it hard, but I didn't grind, speed shift or powershift. I even got a few videos of it :)

22.9 is a good price for a car that they only made 2000 of there seem to go for mid to upper 20s depending on mileage

Do you work in Naperville, Blackbird? That could have been my next door neighbors car. He just traded in his blue/black R32 with exhaust and tints. I always loved the sound of that car. If it is his, he's an older guy that took really nice care of the car usually only driving it on weekends and driving the s-type during the week.

stock r32 homie. blue springs and blue dual piston caliper with directional rotors.
the stock roar is rather nice as well. bank 2/1 sensor 1 ....
did you noticed the actuator on the rear muffler? pending on if you pinched that or lot affects the muffler noise.
i drive them all the time. :ninja: i feel they are extremely heavy. like you can feel the weight of that car most like in the 4000lb range. have nice overall balls and hell yea fun factor is high. 5000 of them suckers ever made. we had one selling for 24k with 32k miles. R32's dont have too many issues well all of them are very low miles and they come in for more interior rattles and trim stuff and of course that o2's, they come in for alignments often too not sure why.

yeah, a guy at my work has one....well he has had it from new, and he says he can beat on the car all fucking day and it will take it. he has had no issues with it what so ever for the past 42k miles.
the valve in the exhaust is cool, he leaves it open all the time so he has that deep sound during low rpms too.
oh and you are right its a fucking heavy car, you could feel it when you close the doors, you hear like a big clunk, kind of like the old buicks and shit. you kind of hear and feel that the car is made solid.

Some cars have a sound like that, because it means quality. Close a door on a lexus, then close one on a sentra, you will see what i mean. The doors are probably heavy since its a 2 door car.

i never paid attention to that stuff. just when driving and going over bumps and taking off you feel the car pull but you also feel the weight of the car slow it down a little. i dont know what made the car so heavy. the 4 motion cant be too heavy. i've had the door apart in those cars and they are built the same freaking way.
i should launch the next one that comes in. i never really launched it, just driving it a little hard and it got up and went.

No stock exhaust on this one, but the Magnaflow is rather loud while on the pedal durring low RPMs... I liked the car, but yeah the interior did rattle a bit- especially when the low frequency of the exhaust hit it- mirror was rattleing :)

Nahh cause 30 min later I get a 00 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro to inspect so they can put it on a lot- and I have NEVER EVER had a list of shit that needed IMMEDIATE attention like this car did....
Both outter CV boots destroyed.
Both outter tie rod ends clunking BAD- for atleast 10K miles now.
Rear diff pissn all over the place
Tranny pissing all over
Valve cover gaskets leaking over the exhaust manifolds- nice smell/smoke
SRS light on- probably needs a new drivers airbag or clock spring.
These are all things that where needed ASAP amongst 10 other interior defects etc. Car has 64K miles.... does that say something bout its quality ?
100K mile old Taurus from that same year- 3.0L Duratec might need a oil pan gasket, or tranny gasket and thats it.
Domestics build higher quality cars than Germans, I shit you not Ford is NOT as bad as everyone makes them seem to be. Big 3 have been making some GREAT cars and trucks lately.
I had a 01 Land Rover Discovery on Tuesday, only 70K miles or so....
Head gaskets leaking all over
Steering gear box leaking just pissn all over the frame
4WD transfercase covered in oil.
EVERY LandRover I see has oil leaks, everything leaks.... Most Ford Explorers I see or Expeditions are pretty decent trucks even with 100K miles on them and being 10 years old almost.

Yeah, depends on what ford.
The focus was one of their worst cars. My friends parents got one in 01 and had problems with it ever since it was driven off the lot.
The trucks are decent though, but thats what ford is really good for....building tough pickup and work trucks.

No domestic knows how to build a good 4 banger entry level car. Colbat is falln apart on the dealers lot, but the engine is its only strong point.
Windstars ALL have tranny issues.
Supprisingly Fords Vulcan 3.0l pushrod motor is not too bad, and anyone who paid for the 3.8L motor was just asking for head gasket issues- these where used in the Windstar and Taurus.
My cousin has a 01 ZX3 5spd, tranny fell apart on it many times. I drove it and it felt like it someone shoved a shop rag in the intake manifold- like the engine was choking big time. He had a 89 SHO that he ran to the ground, it was unsafe to drive with all the rust eating it apart. Yamaha V6 ran great still, when it fired on all 6 cylinders.
Overall Fords trucks are not too bad just lack balls, GM trucks- old ones where notorious for head gaskets and intake gaskets going bad. Newer Vortec ones are actually fairly reliable. Prior to the Hemi, Dodge 5.2 and 5.9L V8s where garbage, the V10 wasn't any better. I had a V10 Ram that I blew every gasket on, tranny failed- all within 2 weeks of driving. Terrible on gas and hard to work on since the front end is so high up.
Nietzsche
10-21-2006, 05:50 PM
I agree that domestics can't get it right on the overall package. I do think they are reliable for the most part compared to the industry just cheaply made. GM powertrains have been very strong and long running even if the gasket leaks on all 3.4s. I wouldn't hesitate to drive an old buick 3.8 with 180k on it.

domestic quality has been going up and "import quality is slipping.
Ford and chrysler still don't make a decent FWD OD trans.
My old bonneville (92 SSE) I bought in 1996 with 115k on it, sold it the next year with 125k, currently has 225k on it. the tranny just blew. I don't think the most recent owner took care of it right though.
by comparison, my old Voyager (96 LWB 3.3) we bought in 2000 with 50100 miles on it, at 60k we put a trans in, 1year and 1 month later we put another trans in, 3 years later (march/april 2005) we put ANOTHER trans in. car had 88k at that point. sold it and bought our 02 montana with about 70k.

the cerified silver with the lip kit 02 i think. going for 16k. A littler higher then my range but i've been thinking about one for a little while.
its probaly has a edge over my 4th gen auto. same MPG, same power just a little lighter. I always wanted a hatch. doesn't look like there are too many known issues with them same as the max's. I dont think i'll do too much either just go hondata or bolt-on's. I drove an 06-S once and it was great. I assume the clutch pedal isn't a high release point like the A4 and passats are. I like the clutch in the R32. If its similiar to that feel on the 02-04 S models i'll probaly snag what i can get for 14k

If you are interested I bet I can get you a nice deal on a RSX-S. These things are certified to 100K miles too.
Known problems- valve cover gasket leaking after 50+K miles. Pretty much bullet proof. The leather will start to look like shit after some years. Recomend going with Katzskins leather or suede kit for the OEM seats. Overall nice cars, for some reason they tend to rust eassy- not the body, but the suspension components etc. Some 02 RSXs look more rusty underneath than my 91 Legend.

At this point i'm still toying with the thoughts. I'm moving back soon and my parents need a car as both their camry's are getting iffy. I'm debating between keeping my car and getting something in the 5k and under area or giving my parents my max, which is the reason why i bought it orginally and getting a newer car. 2002-2004 WRX and RSX-S are in my eyes right now. I'm not a hard core tuner guy. Just simple small things, like if i get a WRX just cobb tunning shit w/e they have for it the ECU flash and full exhuast and that is done. if i get a S like i said hondata or bolt-ons. i'm lookin more on bolt-on because of the immoblizer junk and the down time.
Type-S's come without leather but heated seats or no? I would love cloth and heated seats. I dont know too many option packages with them yet as i haven't seriously looked into them. valve cover, just a simple gasket replacement? or is their a reason why its not sealing correctly? Looks like a 2 hour job as max.
its either those 2 newer cars or maybe a b14/ intergra/ or a 5.0 in terms of older cars.

Get that WRX and all you need to do is turbo back exhaust and flash the ECU with Cobbs stage 2 software and it will be a fun little car.

Good runing Max will tear up a RSX and the Saab from a stop to bout 80MPH. But if you go from 70MPH in the Max... it might be alot diff, 70MPH is a dead zone for the 4AT.
Only the BASE 160HP RSX comes with cloth seats. Type S comes with the cheap azz leather. No RSX has heated seats. 04 was the 1st year of heated mirrors on all models. S had BOSE sound system that is OK, but its nowhere near some of the BOSE (cough cough my Q45s) I heard.
Valve cover gasket is a piece of cake, pays .3 of a hour to do under warranty. Something bout them not liking the heat from the exhaust manifold that causes the gasket to leak, with headers it doesn't seem to be as much of a issue.
HonDATA, DC Race header, Invidia exhaust, AEM CAI, Fidanza flywheel, and IPS cams..... and 07 Civic SI intake manifold. RSX is going to pull like crazy, we are talking close to 250WHP all motor when tunned properly. There are few other things you can make to hit almost 260WHP. 2.0L all motor no turbo.
Ofcourse WRX will be alot of fun all around, especially in the winter, but it won't have that crazy 9500RPM redline.... nor do I think it would stand a chance vs a highly modified RSX. STis don't stand a chance even. K20 responds well to mods, but you have to know what to look for....and what makes power. 340WHP is bout MAX for a stock bottom end EJ20. It will be laggy and won't offer that VTEC scream. And 250WHP NA does make some CRAZY noise at 9500RPM.

I'm still debating between everything. So i dont have too many details of a particular car. Yea the WRX has the most potiential VS the RSX. i haven't driven a WRX yet. nor have a driven a b14 yet. Just a brand new type S and many intrgra's.
These are the thoughts in my head. insurance rates on both cars are just even. both are in the higher rate cat's highly stolen, accident prone, teenage drivers stuff. I'm here and there on the naisoc site however you spell it, so i have a small clue of whats outs there on those. I'm also hanging around the hondatech stuff seeing what those guys are doing. ONe thing bothering me is if i get a 02 WRX with 60-80k on it. it might be beated on by some 16 year old and then traded in for a newer style or the STI when they came out. again just thoughts

I haven't driven a highly modified WRX, I driven some lightly moded ones and never was impressed. But the female say no because " your just gonna be another ricer just like your friends xxx and xxx. all they do is go to car shows and show off the stickers they put" story behind that statement is my spoiled friend got mom and dad to buy him a 06 type-S and pay for everything. He has the JDM stickers all over and all he does is buy JDM shit that only honda ppl will notice like red JDM "H" center caps and other dumb shit. I think he paid $50 for red H center caps.
not everyone is a hardcore guy like you mike. I dont have the pockets at this point to support highly modded car. I took a ride the other day in a pretty much stock rsx-s and it was nice.
Pretty quick for being stock as well. The only downfall to the car is the FWD.
On the way to work today I saw a nice white rsx-s that was modded nice in skokie and all he was doing was spinning all over the place from the rain, not my cup of tea.
If you go with the wrx anything pre-06 you will get the 2.0 motor. Only the sti had the 2.5 with the slightly larger turbo. I heard they lag pretty bad but all you need is to get the Cobb accessport, reflash the ECU in 20 min yourself and you can net a good 20 or so hp for a stage one flash. If you want a little more, which you probably will, you can throw a downpipe in there and flash stage two for some more fun. Only problem, the more power the less reliable that tranny is going to be as well as the diff.
You can keep it conservative and still have fun though.
I am working on the suspension right now, short shifter, exhaust and cobb stage 2 tuning and I hope to have a fun and still reliable little runner. Most guys with some sti swap engine parts and the right tune are making some good numbers, over 300whp/tq and pulling high 12's off since they upgraded to the 2.5 block. I wont go this far though, dont want to shatter that transmission.
I think both cars will be fine for you if you are looking for something conservative to do some light mods to.

Most guys with some sti swap engine parts and the right tune are making some good numbers, over 300whp/tq since they upgraded to the 2.5 block. I wont go this far though, dont want to shatter that transmission.

even with the 2.0 my buddy with the old setup dynoen at 299.1HP to the wheels
but he is using the jdm 6 speed

I wish I had that 6 speed. Much more reliable.
The 2.0 is a strong motor. What the 299 with the vf34?

300WHP is pretty much all the EJ20 can do....
For less you can buy a old school Sentra SE-R, turbocharge it and laugh all day long with 500WHP on a stock engine.

But for him it will be enough fun since his intentions arent to build a 10 sec car.
For me I would be very happy with 300 or a little over 300whp.
As far as I am told if you are nice to the car the tranny will be ok up until that point (300whp/tq), but push any more power and there will be problems.

I don't see myself owning a car for very long. Thats mainly why i don't go hardcore on mods. Reason why i'm not doing anything to my max is cause its an auto. if I get that b14 all i think about is maybe a small turbo running 8-12 PSI.
the WRX will be full exhaust and cobb tuning.
couple of bolt on's and its good for me. I'm not a racer or anything like that. Normally going 15mph over or speed limit. If i wanted a drag car to go all out i'll get a drag car. living in MI i had plenty of chances to pick up some nice strip cars with 350's in them couple of firebirds that would be perfect to strip down and take it to the track. But i want something comfortable to drive for myslef.
just looking for a car to be a little bit faster then stock.

Mike, in terms of engine room. It looks like 1/2 the things are right on top. Have you seen anything go wrong that is like impossible to work on or a PITA to gain access to?
I just took a look at some ebay auctions showing the engine bay shots and yea that valve cover gasket is a cake. i assume the intake gasket is a weak point too cause i've seen tons of ppl swap those out for other ones as well.

Tons of room for everything. I can do a front cover on one in bout 1 hour MAX. They don't leak from the timing chain cover- but I had a few weird cars that had buzzing noises from the oil pump area. I never seen a oil pump fail on a Honda.
WRX you have lots of room in the engine bay once you remove the intercooler. I did a big job on my EJ22 Legacy today- valve cover gaskets, cam seals/plugs, intake manifold gaskets, plug wires, new MAF, new 02 sensor, new oil pressure sending unit. Didn't take me much time at all. Car seems to run very good, but I been driving used cars home- got a 03 Forester for a demo right now :)

Not a big fan of the FX, I drove one 3 years ago and found the interior too cheap looking to my liking. Murano is just as bad.
I might take the Mini S home....

Drive it enough to get it out of your system, then give it back.
