View Full Version : low mileage?
Cousin Ryan

So, the last couple weeks, pretty much ever since we put the new axles in, my mileage has been way below normal. I usually have to fill up once a week, and i can usually get in between 330-375 miles per tank. But the last couple weeks, its been between 275-300. Any ideas on why this coule be. The first week it happened i figured it was because my brakes were rubbin so much, and it was having to rev more and run harder to pick up faster, therefore i figured it was bringing the mileage down. But we fixed the brakes, and the mileage is still way low. Any ideas?

you really think so? It has been around the same temps for the last month or so. And ive only had this problem the last couple weeks. That and i dont remember having this problem the last 2 winters.

knock sensor?
My knock sensor has been out for months now, and my mileage never changed. I suppose it is possible that it was just going bad, and now its completely died out on me. Siballiance has had one for me for months now, and ive had the money, i just havent gotten around to getting it from him.

Probably not...I just filled up after 520 miles...

damn ty.... 520 teach me how!
damn, are u guys all highway miles?
Yep, speed ranging from 55 to 70mph.
damn ty.... 520 teach me how!
1-2-5, 20% throttle, inertia control, keep the revs under 2500 whenever possible.
Cousin Ryan

Yep, speed ranging from 55 to 70mph.
thats insane. i wish i was getting that much mileage on mine. my driving is half and half. when i drive to and from work, its all highway. but any other time, its more suburb driving.

i had 400 miles the other day mostly all highway. i'm gonna see what i can do though to break that now and cruise at around 2000 rpms. that was for 17 gallons.

let the axles break in for the next couple of weeks and see if that changes anything, if not then you got to investigate the problem more.

woow i didnt even know it was possible to get over 450 miles on a tank, on our trip to Niagara Falls 2 month ago i averaged less than 27 mpg with a average speed of 90 mph (3K PRM's) 4 ppl in the car, empty highway :)
in 90% city driving 14 gallons lasts me 200 miles tops, (thats with chicago traffic) :(
Also try looking into changing the fuel filter, a dirty fuel filter can affect the mileage on a car.

whew...at least im not alone... i can hit over 200 on a tank, with 100% city driving. i think thats just horrible, what a waste of gas... but now i tuned the 00VI with a WB, and it should be much better.

i wish i lived in far suburbs, it takes me 20 min to get to hs and 35 to get back home and it is less than 6 miles away, full tank doesnt last even a week with other driving that i have to do :(
traffic gets worse and worse all the time **********

EXTREMELY EASY!!!
edit, paul, can you get me a 300zx fuel filter please?
Pablito
10-29-2006, 11:51 PM
whats the benefit of that
Goldtooth
10-29-2006, 11:53 PM
300zx is bigger, therefore longer change interval.

paul, can u beat 12 bucks on one?
Cousin Ryan

what about the fuel pump? could that be a factor?

yes i can, but your gonna have to hack a bracket that is a litle bigger, cuz the filter size is bigger, and it wont fit in the smaller bracket.
paul, can u beat 12 bucks on one?
ill see today at work, i probably wont respond back, since ill have a camera watching my ass, but im pretty sure i can beat $12....that price sounds like list to me.

sheesh, the 4th gen is EPA rated at 21 city and you guys are doing 17s?
eh, could be worse.
I'm rated 19 and do 17s on this one, my earlier one did 14s on the high side

yea paul i can prob pick this one up if u can get it to hectors, because im a dumfuk and forgot one of my axles in kozues car, so hector has it now.
walec05

yeah, i can probably get it to hector....and why did you only take one axle???

What exactly does "breaking in an axle" mean?

maybe that's why my car has poor mileage too?

I don't see how a dirty fuel filter will lower mileage... if you're starving the engine of fuel (dirty filter)... hows your fuel consumption going to increase?

ah ha! that's a good piont... now that i think about it, it doesn't make much sense.. maybe someone can clarify that?
oo.. i need a new air filter, for sure tho.
what else can cause the low mileage??
walec05
10-30-2006, 10:18 AM
well low gas mileage can be caused by a number of things.........
changing over to winter gas
dirty air filter
bad alignment
frozen or freezing calipers
miss tightened hand brake
a dying fuel pump
bad injectors
there is alot of things that can cause bad gas mileage, you just have to check them one by one and see if anything is dirty or needs replacement.
njmodi
10-30-2006, 10:19 AM
- dirty o2 sensors
- not running premium fuel
- low tire pressure
- bad air filter
- bad knock sensor
- old plugs
- lead foot!!!
- stop-and-go driving - lots of idling
- dirty injectors
paul -you beat me too it :) +1 on the sticking brakes (calipers, parking brake)

so a dirty air filter can cause my mileage to drop.. sweet. i'm going to buy one after work today and change it out.

If it isnt getting enough fuel then your car wont run efficiently so you wont be getting the best MPG or performance (car will run lean)
If it isnt getting enough air then your car will run rich (using more fuel than needed)
lol when all 6 of my injectors were leaking (bad o-rings), I got hard starts (flooded engine) and an amazing 8mpg =P

i dunno what you fools are smoking, but like Dave said, and Ill say it again, its fits perfectly fine.....
Hrm...I wonder what my fuel economy would be if I tuned to NOT run retarded rich...damn VI
walec05
10-30-2006, 06:02 PM
it probably would, but you have noting to worry about, since your doing a swap anyway, and your car will be retardedly fast and get crappy gas mileage.

I'm hoping for 25mpg highway once it's done. Sad considering I get close to 32mpg now...

Pablito
10-30-2006, 07:14 PM
so then y do people change it? just to say they have it?
walec05
10-30-2006, 07:17 PM
they think it gives them something, but it does nothing. it just supposibly lets more fule go through it, but you got a fuel reuglator for a reason....is it really worth the extra $1. i say, since they both last the same amount of mileage and both do the same job, just get the origional one.
Ovaltine Jenkins
10-30-2006, 07:27 PM
nobody thinks it gives them anything. It was already said why people do it. They do it cause it's a lot larger and doesn't need to be changed out as often...
walec05
10-30-2006, 07:29 PM
they are changed out as often as the maxima ones.....about every 45k miles give or take a few thousand.

walec05
10-30-2006, 07:33 PM
eh, we change it out every 30-45k......it really doesnt get clogged up that much. we do it at our 30k services and our 60k services.....
Cousin Ryan
10-30-2006, 10:36 PM
hmm... dave, you think the intake could be a problem? i just took out that long down pipe. so ive got the mid pipe, the intake sensor thing, and than the filter right from that. its a brand new air filter. i know my knock sensor has been bad, as well as one of my o2 sensors too i think. so i should probably replace those first.
Ovaltine Jenkins
10-30-2006, 10:37 PM
well, you are getting more air into the engine. I doubt it would make it go down so much. It's probably the winter formula but I thought that stuff was already around in september?
Mr.Duck
10-31-2006, 01:04 AM
yeah so i'm my gas needle is literally right under the half way mark, and i have a bit more than 280 miles :D about 180 of those miles were driving 3 hours straight from bradley to home
Cousin Ryan

see thats close to what i have normally. i think about 240/250 at halfway. these last couple times have been around 200. we'll see. i just filled up the other night, so im gonna see how this tank goes.
Mr Grey
11-01-2006, 08:29 AM
I blame the winter formula, i don't know how often you put the heat on in your car but that might affect it too. Like you said, those quick launches don't help one bit....you would be surprised how much that kills gas on autos
