hi my name is will and i live in streamwood. i have a '99 camry v6. i like maximas but i think camrys are cooler. my friends toshi and his sister kozue got me into cars and now i want to have a career in automotive. im going to attend UTI this winter(if i can get a hardship liscense) otherwise this time next year. i will go on to get toyota certified and then hopefully start at a dealership afterwards. right now i help my friend mike fix cars and rebuild the occasional engine(mostly hondas). still have alot more to learn, and wish to maybe learn some while at this site.

I went to UTI like 10 years ago, and they are trying to sue me for not paying etc. I know ALOT of people who are not paying eighter. School is about making $$$ for THEM. Think bout it, there are about 2-3K "techs" leaving these UTI campus' every year. They have like what 4-5 campus' around the US. Is there really a need for THAT many techs out there ? Ones I worked with that went through UTI- make about 8-10 bux a hour..... WAAAY off the claimed salary they talk bout in their infomercials.

School does NOT buy you experience.

UTI grad with 1 year experience

Highschool drop out with 5 years of experience

Employer will pick the drop out, seriously.

UTI is like 25K a year now ? if not more.... think bout it. Mine cost bout 8K back then, and I feel I learned alot- bout CARBURATORS.

my friend working at toyota right now is making 17 and hes worked there for a couple months. i go for close to free because im on welfare. i agree, school doesnt buy you experience, but it does buy you a title, and right now that title is ASE certified. yes i have the red banner, i got it for free. i think it will look nice if i ever get to make the car the way i want it. i dont know how im a ricer, but ok thanks. thanks for talking all the shit guys, only reason i came on here was to get ahold of kozue and toshi, not to talk to the rest of you.

yeah, my brother signed up for UTI. he could barely fill the car up with gas, i can just imagine him doing a tire rotation....oh god. he thinks that they will teach him everything there, and he will be paying about 27k for the 11 month period or something. i think its fucking gay, and he shouldnt even go, but oh well, its his life right.

17 a hour is nothing if there are 30 mechanics in the shop all fighting for work. Sooo 17x 40 hours = aint much.

but it's still a camry, so it's over priced.
I sold my 94 for 2k earlier this year and it was a 4 banger LE.
for the same money I could have gotten a nicer max.

well, if i could get the money for a black paint job, i think it will look cool. thanks kozue, wish the rest of them could just say "welcome" instead of what they have said.

well, 17 x 40 = 680 before taxes, a week. right now i make 410 every two weeks(after taxes). and he just started, hes still on trainee pay(he still only does oil changes and other easy stuff right now), as soon as St. Charles Toyota saw that he graduated from UTI they hired him on the spot and he started the next day. sounds better than what im doing now.

Talk to me bout your friend in bout a year.... cause I know how the dealership works- I been working at shops as a tech for 10 years.

I bet in a year he will be a line tech, doing lubes, tire rotations, tire patches, minor services..... and if they got 30 tech working there, I doubt he will ever get above 40 hours. THATs if they ever put him on flat rate.

680 a week, minus insurance, minus uniforms, minus state, minus federal taxes, minus social security- you are left with about 450-480 bux- depends on the insurance. To me making 450 a week x 50 weeks means I make approx 24K a year- WAY off the UTI infomercial suggested earnings. I wouldn't go to UTI if i was you- one of the best things I said to you all day, and probably the last.

well, actually i just talked to him and at st. charles there already starting him on doing engine work. he pulled the head off of a 1nz-fe out of an echo today to put on a new one. not the biggest thing in the world, but its better than doing oil changes. he says he gets 3 hours of over time everyday nomatter what, and more if he feels like staying.(close to 1000 a week after taxes)((but i dont know how close))

then where would you suggest to go to? i think getting a check for 1500 bucks to buy snap on tools at the start is pretty badass. i dont care for snap on, but free tools are free tools. i havnt seen any of the infomercials.

DasTeknoViking

1500 bux of SnapOn shit gets you a GOOD air ratchet, a GOOD air impact gun, and a set of sockets. Thats bout it.

ECHO VVTi problem, yeah I heard. If he gets over time, it means he aint making book hours. And he sure as hell aint making over 1k a week, anyone can brag bout making the $$$..... just to make the person who makes shit for $$$ like a scum bag. I'm sure if I told your friend what I make at Acura, he would feel like hes getting ripped off......

My boss is the coolest dude ever, as long as you show up for work, make him tons of $$ he will be your best friend. His only beef with me, I show up for work bout 20 min late every day, he knows I drive 40 miles each way so that saves me.... but regardless.... great place to work at.

Where else can I make this kinda cash and have fun at the same time ?

Just don't buy any SnapOn swivel sockets.... they are THE worst in the industry. The pin that hold the socket in the base breaks off.

longer can mean better... i think people are becoming too impatient, so they hear about some place that will get you certified in a shorter period of time or whatever, and they go for it. if you wanna get something good, spend the extra time and get trained correctly.

Well the few posts that i read, that mike wrote here are just about dead on. He obviously speaks from experience and not what he hears from other people.

I went thru UTI, then i went thru the VW program. I got shafted since all the chicago area dealerships refuses to hire someone from the VW program due to the rules and restrictions. Same with a buddy in Volvo who is in now in Idaho.

I started off strong banking 44hours a week first 4 months and now i'm down to 32 average. Now its just the BS work since i'm one of the newer guys. I get throw rattles and stupid complaints that will be impossible to duplicate. The only gravy work i get is if i UPSELL everything. We just got 1 dumb writer who cant sell crap.

My boss and warranty people are just dumb. The more recent screw over is with a VR6 motor. Removal of valve cover requires removal of intake manifold. Manifold removing will require whole front end removal. But i got it off without it. pulled the trans and re done the whole freaking timing chain and all sprockets. timing was completely off. I ended up getting shafted and getting paid 6.7 hours. took me 2 full days.

UTI's program is junk. They teach you about 3-4 speed trans that aren't remotely close to being used today. You learn about a 350 small block day in and day out pretty much. When i attended it was 22k. I got a small set of snap-on/bluepoint stuff. Mainly bluepoint stuff, and probaly total is worth 800$ off the truck price.

They only touch on the new stuff but don't know crap about them. I honestly think you can do better without UTI. Graduating from UTI doesn't mean jack. RIght now i applied left and right and got nothing. Because the guys who came from UTI before are the slacks that just quit. Once i'm done with my 1 year here in michigan i'm coming back to chicago. I'm expecting a long downtime till i pick up a new job.

oh mike, i dunno what your talking about those swivel's i have a set of 3/8 impact swivels and i freaking abuse the crap out of them with my IR impact, 1000ft lbs of torque and they still hold up nicely given i only used it for 10months roughtly. no issues

^^^i keep telling this to my brother, but he doesnt listen. he says, because he goes on the ford plan, he will have work forever, since they break down alot, but i tell him, that its mostly warranty stuff, and that UTI doesnt mean shit. he is just paying for overpriced community college material, so to say.

but whatever, if he thinks he will make the 60-120k that they promice him, then be my guest. but in reality i dont see anything good comming from this.

TurTLe
11-16-2006, 11:06 PM
there is no way you can make 60k without experience and ASE's

all the storied UTI teachers tell you seem complete bull.

Yea fords breaks a lot and often but who is worst VW or ford? Thats was one of the reasons why i went with VW. i was like oh hell yea VW always has problems i will always have work. Lately it seems that VW learned to repair themselves cause there is next to no cars coming our way. 3 appointments yesterday. Today i worked on 5 total cars. 3 were junk work and 2 paid a little bit. Nothing worth wild. VW pays 3.3 hours to R/I a trans.

DasTeknoViking
11-16-2006, 11:33 PM
SnapOn uses the pin that goes through the middle of the socket and the head swivels on them. I used to go through 17,14 and 12mm sockets like nothing. I would bust out 16-20 transmissions a week when I used to work at my old Acura dealership. Each tranny taking me about 1.5 hours to do, and it paid 6 hours each :) Even on a crappy week I had 60 hours. Now I wish I made the kinda hourly rate I make now, but I still made very good $$$. I think my personal record will never be beaten at McGrath Acura, where I did 123 hours in one week - working long 8-7 for 5 days.

Regardless, Ford will NOT pay you alot to work on it. Fords warranty times SUCK compared to some of the stuff I get paid for. Domestics warranty labor times suck, and so do VW times. Gone are the days of juicy warranty jobs, I recall doing Audi Quattro trannies for 14 hours on A4 2.8L V6.

I can't really complain, I was off one day last week and booked 50 still...

walec05
11-17-2006, 02:54 AM
man, its not only the domestic warranty times that suck. import warranty times suck too........for example, a trans on a 05 titan 4wd takes about 15-18 hours to do. and it pays around 6-9 depending on if there is an off road package or not. now dont you think thats bullshit???

TurTLe
11-19-2006, 12:02 PM
well 6-9 to r/i and you can normally grab some diag and weasal in some other stuff as well.

i had to do a timing chain job on the VR6 while requires me to r/i the trans. the head tech who did the same job i did 6 months ago got paid 11.7 to do it. it just basiclly r/i trans. and setup timing r/i 2 cams and install new tensions/sprockets and all the little goodies. i got paid 6.7 hours to do the whole thing. but i also had to r/i coolant flanges and a whole bunch of other stuff as a courtesy. My boss tells me not to story it out " i'll take care of you"
he stuck it up my ... i walked in with the head tech asking wtf happen. The head tech should obviously be faster then myself and to only get paid about half as him is wrong. given the fact that it show pay the same reguardless of experience it should pay X amount but there weren't proper warranty times for it. I ran a a total of 12 hours. i figured i should get 10+ but no.
