so my car died again... this time in the mitsuwa parking lot. turned my car off after getting here, tried to lock my doors and my door wouldn't lock. hoepfully, the battery just got loose... but what else can it be? I'm going to have toshi check on his break but... <sigh> there was a whining noise all the way to work... like one of those... remote controlled car motor noise type of thing...

sounds like the alternator. the inside brush rides on a bearing and when that bearing goes bad, the alternator craps out. its what happened to mine.

cuz you just put in a new battey not too long ago, so its not the battery, must be the alternator.

I also think it's the altimanator

that sucks kozue... the altenator is like my worst enemy when it comes to the car... that and the knock/o2 sensors. haha.

mine too.. i had to change the alternator out twice on my last car... within three years or so...

buy an oem one instead of a crapy aftermarket one....then it will last you another 10 or so years.

kkozy1982
11-27-2006, 09:12 AM
hmmmm...

so here's the funny thing. Yesterday mornin', When I tried to lock my doors and what not.. I got nothing. I tried to turn my car on, I got nothing..no lights... just...dead.. had to manually lock all four doors.

Toshi tried a few hours later... it started without a problem.

and...

I just realized this morning that my preset radio stations did not reset, nor did my clock...

wtf is up with that??

Mr Grey
11-27-2006, 09:15 AM
The first sympton sounded like an alternator.
The second thing with the clock not resetting sounds like the immobilizer.

DasTeknoViking

loose battery terminals ?

Nissan reman alternators are just as bad as the stuff you buy from Napa, PepBoys, AutoZone.

I had a alternator crap out on me in my 93 Sentra SE-R, I bought a brand spanking new Nissan Reman alternator, I put it on the car and I drove it maybe 1000 miles that whole year. I ended up selling the car to a guy, and the alternator puked out a week later. Guess what it was out of warranty by 2 weeks..... I don't trust reman parts.

Mr Grey

Check the terminals one more time like Mike said/............

Check the terminals one more time like Mike said/............

toshi did that yesterday but i will do that again tonight :) but if it is a loose terminal(s), wouldn't it reset all the preset stuff?

Mr Grey
11-27-2006, 09:22 AM
Loose terminals don't reset because there's still enough power going to the clock. My terminals were loose when my battery died a month ago. I thought ti was worse, because my clock was fine. I tightened them, and recharged the battery. Mine is about to crap out soon, but I have my battery charger.

DasTeknoViking
11-27-2006, 09:23 AM
Sometimes when the stuff is corroded- looks like white stuff all over the terminals, the car will still keep all its memory. But when its time to start the car or use anything that uses alot of electricity, there is way too much resistance in the wires and the car won't start.

kkozy1982
11-27-2006, 09:26 AM
i shouldn't have any corrosion considering the fact that the battery has been in my car for only a few days...

i do hope it's just the loose terminal issue.. since i'm buying tires within a week so.. i can't afford anything else for my car ATM...

i'll double check after work...thank you :)

duck never cleaned the battery cables when he put the new battery on, so check the cables like mike advised.

when working on a car, there's no excuses for it being too cold or too hot. Do it right the first time and nothing will happen later on. Also my sister's battery cables seem just fine. But guess what, there is nothing holding the battery down, and knowing how rough my sister's car is that battery is bouncing up and down in that engine bay. IDIOTS.

yay, first time I get to call you a dumbass. The battery isn't jumping up or down in the engine bay, it doesn't even move when she drives. Trust me, I drove with that same battery and no crossbar to hold it down for two years now, that isn't the problem. I'd be careful what you say here about anyone cause you know as much about cars as my small, right toe. If anything, the cables weren't tight cause from what I remember, when duck put it on, I only remember him pushing the ground cable down and tightening maybe a turn or two since the cable was so short it seemed that it was tight from teh pressure it was putting on the terminal. Anyway, toshi, just relax and stay calm while you still have anyone here left that looks out for you...

yeah so an alternator is hell expensive from nissan.....its like in the $240 range or so, its a reman unit

the tie down doesnt work because one of the sides is too rusted and will not tighten correctly, i didnt have any tools other than 2 racheting wrenches, which i could not tighten down the nuts correctly, but when i tried to move the battery or the cables, there was enough pressure to keep everything in place, both dave and i have these batteries, and like dave said he hasnt had a tie down for ever now, and i knew this when i gave up on the tie down, because believe me daves ride is more rough than kozues ride

Not true. I've killed TWO OEM alternators in two years. Nissan wouldn't warranty them because I wouldn't let the dealership put it in...why the fuck should I pay $95/hour on a job they claim takes two hours when I can go to Autozone, buy a Duralast, put it in myself in 45 minutes, and if it dies, get it replaced for free? I'm on my second Duralast...I seem to kill these fuckers every year or so...

well, apparently, my car has severe mood swings and only starts when it wants to start. my car would not start this morning either. checked the terminals, seemed fine on there but still would nto start... interesting thing is... when the battery is pushed back in that space, my car would not start. when i pulled my battery forward in that space alotted for it, my car started... my battery's moving around so i do need those tie rods...

it keeps on resetting my mileage(the resettable one)... it's starting to irritate me... nothng else gets reset except that.

Mr Grey
11-29-2006, 09:49 AM
Your terminals are still loose then. My bro could tighten the hell out of the terminals but it would not grab the posts because the terminals were too stretched out.

my battery's moving around so i do need those tie rods...

well, you have that starting problem because its a 99. and i can get you tie rods, but how is that gonna help wit the battery????

if you mean tie downs, i can check on those for you, unless someone on here has a spare set.

but one is rusted to hell, and doesnt hold the battery down. which defeats the purpose of it.

Ovaltine Jenkins

huh? if it's rusted how was it holding the old battery down?

Mr Grey
11-29-2006, 09:59 AM
The nut just has to be PB blasted and loosened up a lil. The tie doen still works

walec05
11-29-2006, 10:00 AM
thats the thing.....it wasnt holding the battery down, cuz i remember duck tightening it, and it wouldnt go far enough to hold it firmly.

Ovaltine Jenkins
11-29-2006, 10:01 AM
interesting, just force it, that's what I do.
Btw, half bled the clutch last night and it goes into all gears, yayz.......

Mr Grey
11-29-2006, 10:01 AM
It's functional...just a lil rusty, and the lighting was not a good to deal with it.

kkozy1982

thats the thing.....it wasnt holding the battery down, cuz i remember duck tightening it, and it wouldnt go far enough to hold it firmly.

paul, i think this battery i have in there is smaller than what i had before.. it's not the one from meijer kuz that one was made so we don't have to pull on the terminal/cable thingy to make it fit. the one i have now is backwards... my battery before this also had a case thing around it...

Ovaltine Jenkins
11-29-2006, 10:04 AM

i know.. one of the bolt thingies is rusted.. that's all.

Ovaltine Jenkins

spray it with some rust remover, let it soak, scrub the rust away and FORCE the nut to thread...

it's been pretty much decided that it's the alternator..

was driving home today and my lights flickered on and off in my car.. luckily i was only 5 minutes away from my final destination. My car is now 95% dead... will not start what so ever... the light only turns on when i open the door... then when i try to start it, it's dies...

stupid.. now i'm stranded...

ok, so it looks like kozue left out some details here.. haha

its only around 160 for the alternator, after she receives her core charge back, and is only paying about 35 dollars out of her pocket for the tow since the insurance is taking care of the rest lol

and no, not a single cigarette break while we did the alternator haha was kinda suprised myself lol........ and i got all wet from her damn car melting on us..
