can do that, or just back up what you really need and format your hd...

4200rpm? hahaha
yeah dude, get a 7200rpm hd, and 2 1gb sticks of ram, you'll be set. well, the cpu is probably slow too...

if you can upgrade to pc3200 400mhz ram. 1gb is enough. the major bottleneck for any computer is the hardrive, in your case the hardrive is extremely slow. Upgrade to a 7,200 and you should feel the difference right away.

pc2700 = 333 not 166 but yeah just upgrade hardrive alone you'll see great improvement in speed.

aren't all laptop HD's PATA? I know that you can pick them up at micro-center, i've seen 5400rpm 60gb HD drives under 100$ but i dont know if there was 7200RPM's haven't shopped for parts at all lately.

sata now adays. $60 for a 5400rpm 60gb, is A LOT...
either way he's looknig at $130 for a 100gb 7200 rpm hd or $110 for a 120gb 5400rpm hd

Honestly 100GB might be overkill for him. Given i dont know him and his usage. He might be using the laptop as a desktop replacement or a 2nd computer. 100GB should be more then enough for a laptop. My vote goes for that $130 one.
Maybe look into getting 2 sticks of higher speed ram even tho your laptop supports PC2700, almost all DDR ram is backwards capitable, you might be able to squeeze a little more speed out of it.

you're not going to need ram at this point. Right now the slowest part is the hardrive, It's actually always the slowest part of any computer. But this one is the bottom line of slowness. Just upgrade the hard drive you should be very happy.
