So I got myself this neat lil device called Alpine BlackBird. Shit ROCKS ! It has a lil SD slot for putting MP3s on it, and with the built in FM modulator you can kick to MP3s or NAVI directions right through the FM tunner.
It will display your current speed, also if you do a trip it will display your average, minimum, maximum speeds. Does traffic and weather conditions through NAVTEQ. So it will display accidents on the road, tell you how fast the traffic is moving etc... they keep on adding more and more coverage and started to include streets and what not.
I have yet to put it in my car- I got it primarily for driving in unknown areas. I am going to FL next Friday and got me a rental car. I don't wanna get lost around Orlando and what not so this will deff come in handy.
For extra $$$ I can hook this up to my Alpine IVA-W200 that I have in my Maxima and it will become full blown NAV unit controlled right through my touch screen head unit- just like all the high end cars have it.
It was 499 at Best Buy, and I got a "Happy B-day" coupon from them for 12% off so it was like 439+tax. I can't wait to give it a full test on the highway later on....

looks nice.......but for some reason i think those units are too small to navigate anyone anywhere. i need a bigger screen for navigation purposes.

It is a bit on a small side, but the screen is bout average size for the portable navi systems. I always wanted to get Alpine navi for my Max to go along with my head unit. Problem is the system I want for my car is bout 1500 dollars from Alpine - this is JUST for the navi system on top of 1000 for the head unit. This thing needs a docking station for bout 160 bux and it will do 90% of the things the 1500 dollar unit will do for half the price.
Since my screen in the car is pretty big, it should look very nice.

is there a monthly service fee you have to pay for the up to date traffic reports? What are the hidden fees in this?
personally i have been looking at these items for a while i saw some unknown stuff on blackfriday for 250. I wanted to get tomtom for the smart phone that i have. its 250$ but reading thru my phone sucked. I'm not looking to hook it up to the radio just using it as is mounted on my windsheild maybe next to my x50 =P

Let me see what I am getting.... you look and talk like her I will buy you your own car with navi.
Traffic reports are free for 90 days with the BBird, its like 60 bux for a whole year worth of coverage. I drove the car around with it and its PIMP. My friends want to get them for their vans now... my brother has a older TomTom, its nice and all, and I was going to get a TomTom myself..... but what got me to buy the Alpine was that I can use it in my Maxima using my HU and it becomes full blown touch screen navi/dvd player/DVD-A/IPOD/Sirius....

Nice pick up Mike. I have been thinking of getting something similar. the advantages are you get to haul this thing with you in any car as opposed to using it in just one car. Thimking about it this way, makes it worth while...........

I dunno if its just my unit or not, but the AUTO sensitivity for the display DAY/NIGHT setting SUCKS. It keeps on switching to DAY as soon as a bit of light hits it - like a car with his lights on behind me..... Kinda distracting. The voice can't be changed as far as I know, so I am stuck with a sexy female- not a problem thou. Unless there is some kinda secret hidden menu somewhere... alot of diff features are not found on this model vs TomToms for instance.
Only selling point of this unit- its battery operated. For instance you get stranded somewhere in the middle of nowhere, you can take the unit with ya and it CAN help you find help. Battery life is like 5 hours with the screen on the whole time. Another cool thing I like is that I can link it to my Alpine HU and pretty much have control over it via my HU. I wish they did away with the built in MP3 player and added some cool features that TomToms and Garmins have.
