not bad for $400
I thought about it when I saw the ad, but said f-it.
I don't need another project like that right now

We were pleasantly surprised. Rust is very minimal, interior is dirty but not too worn or nasty... should turn out nice. Hopefully that noisy lifter is easy, shouldn't be too bad. Worst part is the passenger side, looks like the rear door and qtr were re-painted, doesn't match the front door and fender too well. Still nice for the price.

that's not lifter noise.
that's VTC tick, nothing unusual.

well, it's noisy at idle, then if you rev it up to 2000-2500, it gets silent, then comes back when it goes back to idle. What exactly is VTC tick, and how does one silence it?

My fear is that it will drive reaaaally nice in the end and I'll want to keep it. Hopefully the motorized seatbelts and loss of mpg (compared to my Sentra) are more than enough to resist the temptation of getting back into a Maxima.

VTC tick is the spring wearing out inside the VTC sprocket.
you can either a: rebuild them (kit is like $30 by paul, and they had them in stock, you need 2 kits)
b: Ground out the yellow wire, you lose some power on the low end, but nothing terrible.

Any ideas on a clutch that's stuck in? The pedal has almost zero resistance until you get to the very bottom of the stroke, and no matter where the pedal is, you can shift through all 5 gears and reverse with the engine running. I was thinking a bound-up throwout bearing (car has ~178k on it) or perhaps something hydraulic?

the clutch isn't bled correctly... air in the system... check the tank that is behind the FL suspension...

Let me know bout the Civic also.... my Scoobie will be gone this weekend hopefully.

Civic will be ready this week. 97 DX hatchback, 105k miles on it, auto trans. Body is a tad rough, but nothing too bad (crooked fenders, dings and scratches here and there). Cold AC, good tires, runs real nice. We're looking for 3500 obo.

Also, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the clutch hydraulics on the 93 Maxima. The actuator on the front of the trans moves back and forth with no problem, and when the clutch pedal is released and the car is in gear, it will barely creep forward (and smell like burning clutch). So I'm guessing the clutch disc is just totally worn out. I guess we'll see. The clutch fluid sure is gross though, black as midnight.
As for quieting the VTC racket, where exactly is this "yellow wire" that can be grounded out? And does anyone know of a writeup for replacing the VTC springs? My father-in-law the nissan mechanic described a PITA job, and was happy that he hadn't done any of those in at least 6 years.
Took some pics of the 93 with a real camera today. Aside from some minor rust in the bottom corner of the rear doors and the typical spoiler hole rust, the body is really straight and clean (aside from some minor rear bumper/trunk panel damage).

Understandable. Know any good links for VTC writeups? Especially the "yellow wire."
So I take it you're a Van Buuren fan? Isn't he coming to town next month? I've seen him at Vision a few times, damn can he rock the place. Think I'm gonna pass on his next visit and hit Picotto on the 14th instead.

Yeah, not many people really like the look. I debated about doing it for about a year. Now that it is done I like it. I didn't do it myself, I had a fabrication shop do it. Cost mucho dinero, more than probably worth to anyone but me. I am doing the final finishing. It is kinda rough yet. The shop did the metal work since I weld like caca.
The panel is off my parts car from last winter. It was in too good of shape to let it go to the scrap heap, so I removed it. It has been sitting in my garage for about a year now. Someone off the org is getting my '90 center panel.

While the lights don't exactly fit the contours of the car, you can tell they were nicely integrated. Definitely unique, I like em.
I didn't make it to the yard this weekend, and I probably won't next weekend. Any idea how much it'll cost to ship that panel to 60423? Probably not TOO much, but it'll need to be well packaged. This 93 won't be ready for the street any time soon, but getting a nice panel for cheap sounds good. PM me a price with shipping and I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Madison is a sweet town, I have a buddy that lives on lake Koshkanong (I think that's how you spell it) in Edgerton just south of you. Actually, he is heading down to my place on the 13th... maybe I can convince him to bring it. How much you want to drop it off at his place? He's right off the highway, or he could probably meet you at the Shell station right there at the exit. I'm not sure how often he goes up to Madison, I could also have him meet you somewhere near you. Let me know.

That could work. It will be a few weeks before the Max is ready for a trip..again..thanks to some stupid broad that decided the front of my car would look nice with her car attached to it. Biatch pulled out of a parking ramp right into my front end. I swerved to miss her and she kept coming. Caught me in the side right between the front tire and the corner light. At least she has insurance.
