Well I just ordered an STS off Ebay (about the only place i could find it). If you've done this mod to a 3rd gen any advice you may have would be helpful. I'll keep any interested party posted on how it turns out.

That would be Short Throw Shifter. Sorry about that.

basically you wasted your money.
you can mod the stock shifter fairly easily to achieve the same results but without the crappy feel

So how exactly would I do that?

move the ball.
it actually can be moved up and down on the shaft

So how long should the installation of a short throw shifter take?

you gotta take off your exhaust I'd think, or at least the heatshields....the nuts that hold the retaining thing for the shifter is under the hump thing and over the shields. I can't think of any other way to do it.

Be sure to compare it to your current shifter though. It the distance from the ball to the part where it connects to the control rod is the same, then you REALLY wasted your money. You're timing won't really be any faster than it is now. That's why it's nice to move the ball up on the shaft of the shifter, because it makes the distance you have to shift gears shorter and therefore quicker. If the new shifter is the exact same except the threaded part on top is about 2inches shorter, well then thats only for looks, nothing more. You might as well have cut the top off your current shifter and re-threaded it with a die from home depot.

It's a 10x1.25 pitch, if I recall. I cut 2" off the top of my shifter, rethreaded it, and moved the ball up another inch with a press. I tried heating it in the oven and using gloves, but it didn't work, even at 400 degrees for 1/2 hour. The whole project took about an hour, and I have a MUCH better response. I almost wish I took another inch off the top though, to give it a more sporty look.

I heard MANY bad reports about almost ever STS made for the 3rd gen. They have a crap feel as soon as the exhaust heats up the metal ball. The ball expands, and shifts become too tight and difficult. I've even heard of people being unable to get into third it was so bad with the pacesetter STS. Just words of caution, be careful...this is one of those things you don't want to do twice.

Yea.....and he was actually able to answer what no ****er on here (self included) was able to answer.

Give him a little credit, he did his homework and although he might've been too late I'm sure the original OP will get a notification email if he has that setup.

Nice job Matt, very nice :wifive:

haha...well can you tell how often I frequent this forum?? I really should have been on top of that, though. I guess now the question doesn't have to be asked twice.

Hey John, I'm only responding a month and a half later!!
