I'm wondering if anyone knows what's involved with avdancing the timing on a vg engine and what the gains-losses might might be?

timing light is needed, its pretty simple.... loosen the distributor and turn it till the marks on the crank pulley change to the desired time. I've done it on my 91 Max also. It was actually below factory spec which is 15 if I remember right, mine was at 10 degrees. I bumped her up to 18 degrees.
It picked up alot of low end power- A/T and it can smoke the heavy 17" 00 SE wheels still. Negatives- gotta run midgrade or premium fuel, if its really hot outside I recomend premium to prevent detonation.

My timing was so far advanced, past the last tick mark for months and it ran pretty fine all thru the summer(i didnt know it was this advanced until friday) so when i found out i retarded it back to 17 degrees. Well theres definitly a big power loss but my idle has smoothed out and cold starts are better. But that power was alot nicer.... i ran a mix or reg and premium and i never had a detonation... that i could hear at least and the engine light never came on.

my **** was set way off when I got to mine. Thanks to Biggs for teaching me how to adjust timing. Now I've had mine on 17 degrees for about 1 year and adjust this ^ dude to 17 on friday

I think I need to adjust it on this B13 :sucks:

I think you do too. Plan on ball parking it or using a timing light to do it properly?

depends on when/where I do it
I'll probably ballpark it so it runs smooth at idle.
this idle bites the big one.
