I am currently in the process of installing a double din Alpine that I bought from Jez, thanks Jez by the way. I have bought a new harness to integrate into the HU into the stock harness, but my question is this:
Is it better to replace the speakers with non-bose, or just use the bose?
Each speaker has it's own amp right?
Can I use the existing wiring to install the replacement speakers into the doors?
Also I'm not using the Bose Sub

I have Bose and and a MoMo Subs...
I am using a Pac converter to use my Bose subs..
Seems like everyone here hates Bose but I really LOVE the way my system sounds..
I have this in my car btw

upgrade the bose speakers with a nice set of components like rainbow audio focals or boston's you will need a new amp to power the speakers

bose WILL sound terrible.... you need to upgrade the speakers to some components like infinity kappas like i have... also the wiring WILL need to be upgraded as well its like 22 awg!!!

Rainbow are awesome.
Bostons are awesome.
MB Quart produce some of the most detailed highs I've heard.
Dynaudio sound verrrry nice.
Bose can still sound good, before you sink a TON of $$$ on speakers give them a try. My Monsoon sounds very good with just a sub, why spend the extra coin ? MOST folks can't tell a diff between OEM speakers and aftermarket ones once there is a sub and aftermarket sub hooked up to them.

I think the bose speakers in my 5th gen suck, but I used to really like the ones in my 4th gen. I replaced them with Infinity's and they are ok too. I don't need anything too crazy or expensive. If I simply replace my 6.5's in the 5th gen with some basic infinity's will I have to rewire? Without an amp that is.

you are better off rewiring when u put in the new speakers also the rainbows are under $300 a pair and are awesome speakers look in the deals section on the org also in the audio for sale there are really good deals on there if u would like to check the rainbows i have a set its a 3 way speakers i'm planning on installing very soon hope this helps.

22AWG??? that can't be right..... unless 5.5 gen has different from 5 gen. mine is definitely not 22
BTW i have $50 speakers, and i would not pay extra 150 for maybe slight improvement in sound, HU would be the best improvement at this point, but i dont want to have something semi-gross in my dash

Its 18 gauge, and realistically HOW much power do your INTERIOR speakers need ? 18g is fine.
I had a pretty big 4 channel Alpine amp running Bostons in my 5th gen, never an issue with sound quality.
Subwoofer on the other hand, if its a quality sub- nothing under 400 a PIECE is quality.... it needs some thick wire. I ran 10 gauge to the sub from the amp with 2g wire for the amp.

just 22 awg??? must be cheap speakers...... id go with 16awg; as for speakers having their own amp....not unless you get EXPENSIVE components; imo, my bose speakers sound nice with my kenwood hu, but were only talking 45x4 watts....that pioneer probably needs a seperate amp, so u might need to go with better quality.....if youre going to go for best bang for buck; go with some pioneers. If youre looking to spend a little more money, i say go infinity kappas

Infinity sucks, stay away from them. I had 3 sets go bad on me in my Sentra and Maxima.
SPEAKERS do have their own amp, all BOSE Nissan units where like that.
Your Kenwood could be 10wx4 and it would same the same with BOSE working. All it does is send a signal to the speakers and an adapter modifes the high level inputs into low line.

Dude, you need to stop living in the past. Seriously todays cars are quiet and solid, you do not hear any outside noises. With quality components I can build you a system that no home system can even come close to sounding as good for 3x less than you home system.
I forgot you drive a 4th gen, which isn't exactly a well insulated car to begin with. I've been into car audio since I was 14 years old, reading Car Stereo Review. I've blown enough Infinity BS that I don't want anything to do with Harman International - own Infinity, JBL etc.
On top of that, most of us drive ALONE in our cars. We can blast whatever we want and how loud we want. How many of you can go full tilt in your house on your volume knob before yo mom comes down with the broom yelling

What do you have at home that sounds so fabulous ?
I bet you my stock Monsoon system with just Subwoofer sounds louder and cleaner than that Infinity stuff you have.
You obviously have not heard a good system in a car yet. Infinity makes LOW end audio products, nothing great about them. Same goes for Pioneer HUs.

this is about 5.5 gen that i am familiar with(amp in the trunk)
the signal wires go to the amp first after the amp the wires go to the speakers, the wires that go to the speakers are ENOUGH, its not Subs running 200+ RMS @ 2 ohms. so what normal people would do is replace the stock amp with aftermarket and use stock wires, the wires that went from OEM HU carry only line from new HU to new the amp and after the amp the wires are ~18 AWG (def not 22)which is enough to power new speakers.

So I bought and installed a pair of Alpine SPR-17's, I think that's what they are, anyways, they suck. The stock Bose sounded about the same, no bass and the sound quality is not great either. I also ordered pair of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=008&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=180237322055&rd=1
My question is, if I install an amp to power the speakers, will it dramatically improve the sound quality or power or what? If the speaker is weak in the first place and distorts with just the HU powering it, how will an amp make it sound? I really expected a better sound from the Alpines. Or is it sounding like **** because of the stock wiring?

again.. if ur gonna have an amp upgrade the wiring...

Baker, get an amp. Thats why they sound bad. To top it off rear doors in 5th gens need baffles. They are very hollow sounding. I didn't have sh!t for bass with aftermarket speakers that are NOT Infinity (because I blew those out, Infinity SUCKS). Wireing has nothing to do with it.

I have owned MANY head units, Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Alpine. Alpine has been THE most reliable out of all those. Also the sound quality is HARD to compare, but Alpine doesn't have any stupid crazy looking displays that go all crazy while driving (aka Pioneer).
I don't buy into cheap car electronics, so no DUAL, no Jensen BS in my car. I have been into car audio for last 13 years, heard MANY different setups when I used to attend IASCA shows.

Alright, we shall have a system throw down.... YOUR expensive azz Infinity/Pioneer
VS
my stock Monsoon w/Alpine V12 mono Amp and Eclipse 12" sub.
There is a reason I never touched the speakers and HU in my car, its THAT good that I am affraid to touch it.
BTW if you need some, I got some Infinity speakers laying around from all the blown pairs I had. I will bring some just incase you blow em up.
Baker :
You need a subwoofer, 5th gen doors don't reproduce much bass without serious baffleing and stuffing em. What I recommend is running that THICK power wire from the HU directly to the battery if you haven't. It will sound ALOT better, I don't know if you did or didn't. Then go into the HU and set up the high pass filter for 80hz and low pass for 80hz, turn on the subwoofer output and feed your sub amp 80hz low pass. Toy around with the subwoofer gains till you get the right bass. PM me if you need any help, I will gladly assist you.
BTW register on Alpine's site so you can change the HU backgrounds through the iPersonalize site !

yes thats the ONLY way to do it.... just make sure you impedance match the amp to the speakers.... also your gonna need a 2 distribution blocks one for power and one for GND...
also make sure that if the speakers are 100 watt rms the amp is AT LEAST 90 RMS

clipping is cutting off the amplitude of the wave because transistor can't produce it, thus travel of the speaker is lowered(excursion) while the voltage goes up, not enough ventilation/ cold air, so voice coil overheats, BUT if you have strong speakers you will not kill it by weak clipping amp

yea u dork at 5% power it will run all day... ur saying that your 40 watt rms amp doesnt clip at high volumes hu?? so what happens when i want to listen to some loud music and i have your setup here hu?
im not even go into why clipping occurs but...
what happens is that as soon as i cross the threshold of the amp heatsink.... meaning that overtime the amp gets hot and 60% of its power is being converted into heat... it begins to clip/ distort... and what happens to your output stage?
bring me a setup like that and ill put my scope on it so that you can see what u dont understand...

ALL maps clip if you go over the rated power, assuming that manufacturer was not pouring liquid nitrogen on the transistors when was doing the tests and supplying no more than 14.4 volts
40 watts is ~ 12.6491106 V @ 4 Ohms..... so if you keep under that output voltage your amp should not clip if you are feeding enough power for the amp

also in the trunk, or under the passengers seat. ive seen them put in both places. running the wires is not that hard.
DasTeknoViking
05-18-2008, 08:39 PM
I had one under the pass seat, since you have to run wires out from the amp..... its best to tap into the stock wire harness. This way you don't have to run ALL new wires like a mad man. UNLESS you have a TON of time on your hands I would just use the OEM harness to feed the speakers power. With the amp that close, the wires don't need to be VERY long.
