View Full Version : Installing a Transmission
I recently bought a 1992 Nissan Maxima SE....had some minor issues but ran great. Went on a trip to Canada and three hours into the trip my transmission fluid began leaking :banghead: My girlfriend told me not to drive the car...but being a hard head I went on to drive the damn car. We got stuck in Jackson Michigan...towed to a repair shop that asked for 2G :bawling: to repair it. Rented a tow dolley attached to a u-haul to get it back here... I thinks its the seal/gasket [well i know its the seal], but i I know thats a lot of work..... and thats what i am asking....does anyone know how to swap the transmission and what sources can i seek out to do it myself. This will be the largest project i will have ever attempted. Most of my car repair experience happens to be small ie brakes, oil, fuel filter, plugs, O2 sensors etc. Help Help Help!!!
By the way....the repair guy said that its unheard of for the seal to break down...has to be something internal.

it is something internal.
if the trans doesn't work after you refill it you might as well get a used one.
or just give me the car.

lol...yeah fill it up if it doens't work then the tranny is dead. My accord's tranny hose came loose and fluid all came out, put new fluid in and it worked. I'm guessing 2g's mean you're tranny is dead and you're gonna need to buy a new one or sell it to internetautomart :D
If I get it fixed Id be willing to sell it, but I am looking to do the work myself...have either of you swaped a tranny before. OOOh yeah, it doesn't hold an ounce of fluid, but the car still drives.....and of course i'm not driving it now. I priced a used one for $600.

if it didn't hold an ounce of fluid, it wouldn't drive at all.
I drove a car once on about 3 qts of fluid (total including converter I think) I had to do about 4k to go 5 mph :woah:
the car probably isn't worth putting in a trans, unless it's totally rustfree.
I bought mine (Rust FREE) for $500 (needed 2 injectors )
i bought a rusted one for $200 (ran fine)
I bought a VE5 for $50 ( I should tell Masa about this board)
my first one I bought from a friend of a friend for $200 (needed 3 injectors)
These cars aren't worth much to most people. I like them because I know them and they are fun DDs.
oh, and the rusted one had a PERFECT black leather interior in it.
Seems like no one has a transmission to buy for this car. The only place that said that they had a trans. was U-PULL It/ Speedway. The're the ones that quoted me the $600. The car costed me $1300. I'd sell it for $700 [delivered to the front door of anyone interested]. But i would really like to keep the car and fix it myself. The trans on the Nissam Maxima must be one of those things that most don't want anything to do with. Its rust free...if i get a hold of a digital camera I'll post the pics. But i really need to find someone to help me with this damn transmission!

have you tryed car-part.com?
Changing a autotranny on at 4th gen was a bitch to do. I got some help from some friends, ie Dave and Hector, but other than that i pretty much did most of the work myself. If you can't find a tranny under $400 its really not work fixing since the car itself is work $1300, you are just better of parting out the car.

dude my girl got get transmission recently installed in her car rebuilt with warranty. Her dad is a mechanic and has buddies...her tranny costed 600+100 to unmount and 100 to mount so total came to $800 but her tranny runs great..better than mine.
On the other hand, if your Max wasnt an SE I would have a working tranny for you in my garage but I think they're different.

Does anyone know if the SE is different? I am not sure if it really is a SE or not. I am going off what the repair slip says. To my disadvantage...i don't have a pops' that is a mechanic....and of course you can't beat that price [$800]. I am going to the Alsip swap market on saturday or sunday to see if i can pick up an impact wrench and other electric impact tools. I am on a mission to get this car running. By the way how much would he charge to swap a tranny for a person who is not a family member ? Just a thought!
I sought out the tranny on car-parts.com...very expensive. I went on ebay and saw some transmissions [rebuilt] for $450 + shipping from Japan. Risky...very. Not only do i have this transmission to worry about, but i have another car [1990 Toyota Camery 4 CL] that needs an engine. Talk about car problems. :banghead:

lol, Brian pwned Paolo with a simple line. Thanks for trying to help Paolo :)
As for the tranny, I dont know how much I'd sell it for I dont know for sure if the tranny is in excellent condition but the guy I bought it from is from the org and he claims that it was in excellent condition when it was pulled out from his Max..he said it shifted smoothly and was NOT slipping at all. If you'd still like to give it a shot with it..make me an offer and I'll see if I decide to sell it as I was saving it in case mine went bad. By the way, where do you live by beside Chicago Heights (what streets)?
Streets: 10th and Halsted
Price: $350
Value to my dead Maxima: Priceless

that installed price?
does that include flushing the trans cooler?
is that rebuilt or used?
see you again in 10k
No. Its just the dollar amount i am willing to pay for the unseen tranny. Flushing the trans cooler?! Now you lost me. If every i get the time to jack it up and unbolt the tranny...i will probably take it somewhere to get it rebuilt. Do you thiink thats a good idea?
I was sitting in the car today remember all the good times i had rollin around...:bawling: before it went belly up.

when atransmission is replaced it is a good idea to flush the transmission cooler to make sure that any particles of metal are completly out of the system and won't shorten the new tranny's life

ya, he is right. you want to get all the old fluid out as well, since that could kill it too.
