Thats pretty damn good for a Maxima. Most of the ones I've seen have camber issues in the front, and too much toe in the rear.
They didn't do a good job, should have shown you the before and after (actual) readings, give you the caster readings too.

you can say just because he didn't do the before and after reading that its a bad job. yea we dont know how much work he actually did.

it almost looks as if they diddnt do anything towards your alignment. they need to fix the rear toe on the right side and make it even with the left, and make the camber closer together in the front. the fixed the toe up there, but nothing else.

Supposedly front toe is all you can adjust on these cars.

Today sucked...I had planned on:
1. installing my new MAF
2. swapping out one of my o2 sensors (bank 1 rear)
3. measuring my steering rack's sliding force
4. tighten up swaybar end links
5. overall suspension checkup
...and I didn't do anything.
The only thing I can do is the MAF but since I can't do anything else, I'm feeling lazy. All started when I discovered one of my jackstands broke, so I bought some at Sears for $25. I also was looking for a luggage scale (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=210992187&listingid=41570844) so that I could do #3...found one on their site but both Sears I went to didn't have it.
So I figure I'll just do the o2 sensors & suspension stuff. Went to an Autozone & two Advance Autos...neither had the Denso o2 sensor in stock.
So now it's just down to suspension stuff. I jacked the car up and realized the jack I have (Duralast POS) doesn't raise the car high enough for the new stands I bought (Craftsman..."high lift"...guess I wasn't thinking). So that took me out of commission & didn't get anything done.
What a waste of a good day. Hopefully tonight is better.

Why not just throw the old pads back in if you still have 'em? I tend to take all old stuff out carefully 'cause I might need to put 'em back if I have problems with new stuff.
FWIW I use Autozone/Duralast pads & rotors...works fine for me; then again I don't do that hardcore driving that yall probably do. Been on these pads for 10k miles & still got a lot left in them.

As for the calipers.... get used to doing them on a Maxima. I replaced my rears 2x by 180K miles. My moms Altima needed new ones @ 60K miles ALL around.
I adjusted my suspension to full soft to see if I can roll on coilovers this winter AGAIN. I am too lazy to put the OEM stuff back on.

you have 2 frozen capliers, put your old pads on and they work fine now but your low on pad? if your driving on them then they aren't frozen....
if your really low on money you can buy a rebuild kit from napa and do it yourself. not too hard.. i've done it once on brembo.

are you twisting/screwing the REAR pistons? I'm pretty sure the 5th gen is still a screw type. Hence you will not force it in with just a c clamp like the newer model.

if they wont go in when twisting, you can try loosening the bleeder valve and sometimes they finally go in after no effort with it open. thing is you will have to rebleed the brakes, which at this case sounds like you should flush brake fluid too.

Autozone can rent you a brake caliper tool that can twist & compress the caliper in:
http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/grn/27111/image/6/
It's got the notches that stick into the caliper and then it's got a T-handle that you twist.
Even after using that tool one of my calipers still wouldn't budge, so I ended up grabbing new calipers from Advance Auto.
One caliper wouldn't compress while the other one just looked like crap & the piston's boot was torn (now I know why my wheels' paint is all cracked at the edges) so I just bought 2. Was $90/ea after turning the core in. No compressing needed for the pad install!

You mean 4th, lol - but yeah speed was in the range mentioned (not gonna incriminate myself 'cause I usually don't speed). But I did learn that my car pulls pretty hard to the left the faster I go, so having to fight the steering wheel could have something to do with fuel economy.
I cheated on the way back by bumping my tire pressure up a few psi which definitely made the car more squirrelly than it already is. With my city driving I get about 18mpg, so I didn't think 23mpg was that bad. Keep in mind this is with the computer's trip readings...not fuel fill-up / distance traveled, so actual is probably 1 or 2 mpg lower.
I just changed plugs, knock sensor, and cleaned the TB & MAF not too long ago and this made the car more punchy & it coasts way better (meaning I end up over-accelerating & using the brakes more), but I was wondering if the ECU just hasn't adjusted yet. I do have an O2 sensor code but it's for a rear sensor, so it shouldn't affect fuel economy at all.
Bad suspension + bad fuel economy = time for a new car?

If you want 4 doors and economy with some gizzmos : I welcome you to the TSX. I had a 09 TSX for a few days not too long ago, cruising at 70MPH on cruise control returned 36MPG and that is NOT by using the onboard computer, which was very accurate.
Ones in the Maximas are garbage, they read way high all the time.
Our 04 TSX gets very good mileage also. My R32 stock weight is 3300lbs.... mine weights a bit less as I took the rear seats out (90lbs- leather with metal frames) dumped the stock 28lbs each wheels for 14lbs wheels, CF hood vs stock hood... lighter exhaust. I guess it should be around 3100lbs (pig considering its size vs a Maxima). My car is thirsty as fuck, compared to a normal Golf. I knew what I was getting myself into when I bought it. 115K on mine with original sensors and no cleanings.

I think all the 5-speed & 6-speed 5th gens are manual transmissions. Since I drive an auto, the number of speeds/gear-ratios really don't concern me - step on the pedal & go is good enough for me; and floor it if I really need to go.
I already know this but fuel economy is all in how you drive - though I got about 23mpg this past weekend, I just managed 34mpg (based on the trip computer) while being cruise-controlled @ 60mph from LSD to about 71st on I-94, with a lot of coasting around downtown & the s-curve. So maybe nothing was wrong and I was driving too ___fill_in_the_blank___ to get such horrible economy.
The good thing was that I wasn't paying for the gas this past weekend thanks to it being a school-sponsored trip.

Hector you're still rocking that Certifit rad support?

Nope...it's the OEM one. The support is fine it was just attached fully. The car was starting to creek and rock too much so I decided to get it fixed.
I thought I was going to have to replace a lot of parts...now it's just endlinks thanks to the fix

Drove my car back from NIU and stopped at my girlfriends house it drove fine the whole way but when I started it again it was misfiring bad. So, I went to Autozone and found it was cylinder 1 so I tried replacing the spark plug first then i eventually found out it was the ignition coil and put down 80 bucks for that but now it runs good.
I looked at the 240 while walking in the house, reminisce how much I drove it in the summer and look forward to this up coming spring when I get to drive it again regularly.

Dad's exhaust (the rear pipe up to the muffler) on his 2001 Subaru Outback wagon practically fell off 2 days ago. I was working, so he just took it to the dealer. They were going to charge him over $2g to replace the whole system. Assholes even said the whole thing from front to back was rotted/rusted out. I said "Fuck that!", and we took the car back from the dealer. A quick drive to Prospect Heights to the guys that installed my mufflers... an hour later, and $80 poorer, and the rear pipe was fixed.
The idiot "service manager" even tried the "if you have someone else fix it, you will throw a check engine light... lose performance... yadda yadda yadda" bit.

Nah, because the pads on there were from back in March when I first got the car & had it done at a shop, so no warranty in place on those. Braking power just felt a little spongy/lacking lately. Grabbed the ceramic Duralast Golds for about $40...with the warranty.
If only the service manager didn't try to bullshit me...
I don't know if it's truly called BSing...sometimes it's just they "have to" recommend certain things.
I actually had a similar problem with this car when I first got it - a hanger for the exhaust was loose & causing a banging sound. Dealer "recommended" replacing the B-pipe at a cost of >$1k. However, once I talked to the tech, he happened to be a down to earth guy & told me I should just go to a muffler shop; said that they just have to write that stuff. That incident just tuned me onto the fact that techs know how to fix stuff but their employer wants them to say it's a bigger problem than it really is.

They're fine for me 'cause all I've ever known were Duralast brakes. Before I started servicing my car myself, the shop I would go to used AutoZone/Duralast almost for everything. And on my old car, the pads would be gone like every 3 months. That's why I'm surprised the Duralast ones the shop put on this car in March still had like 50% left, 9 months later.
I assume you guys know more brands of brakes that are most-likely performance-oriented, so I can truly understand why you might think they're bad. It's kind of like headphones - back in high school I wasted so much money on expensive headphones (cans that cost more than $100) and since then, those $10 headphones just don't cut it for me.

the duralast gold pads are sooooo fadey and soft. i put their newest duralast gold cmax's on the brothers car, and when properly bedded in and new brake fluid, they are still super soft. where i would use metal masters, and my brembo sport pads, these things just feel like they are just made for being quiet and the least amount of dust. i can say the same about regular duralast pads and the golds too.
if you spend your money on a decent aftermarket pad, they will last 3-4 years. my metal masters were still good after 30k miles with a couple track days and autox days too. they still had quite a bit of meat left on them. they only cost me 30 bucks shipped.

i had metal masters on the lancer, it went thru 15k with the GF driving and done. I then had OEM pads an another 15k and done. the pads currently are raybestos and this has 20k with about 50% left. I would say all 3 were great pads at about $25-50 range but now if i had to do it again autozone 100% since that car sees only daily driving. But i would say pads are something not to cheap on or wait to get done.

I had 4 sets of HPS on my Maxima on 2 diff brake kits, then I went with the big Brembo kit from TireRack for 2400 bux and never looked at brakes again. I was able to brake later than any car on the track thanks to them. But then again I wasn't carrying as much speed as some of the bigger HP cars.
I got HPS on my R32 now all around too, I wouldn't recommend them. In my scenario they don't like my big rotors. They need some temperature to operate well, and having 13+" rotors that are thick as hell... they stay cold. But I got 30+K miles on them and I got about 60% life left ! I think it will take me to 150K miles before I do them again.

but primer is porous, rust is now building under that primer. Should have just rattle canned it with a cover coat just to protect it or not bothered primering it at all, or just waited to swap parts which is what I will be doing hopefully.

today I chipped off the paint covering my rust, removed the front plate bracket, and swapped back on my 5 spoke wheel.
Good new, only panel that is holey is the drivers fender. the rest is just surface under the paint so "easily" fixed.

Not quite today, just forgot to post it... replaced my front driver side strut mount as it was clunking like crazy. Rides like a new car now. Also finished replacing the front valve cover tube seals which were letting oil into the middle front spark plug tube, I did all anyway.
On a last minute drive to Grand Rapids last night, I got 405 miles out of 16.5 gallons of gas and my gas light wasn't quite on yet so that averaged to about 24.5 miles per galon with 2 passengers, doing about 85mph average, 35psi in tires and a bit idling before leaving... I think if I would've averaged 65-70mph I could've gotten a lot higher efficiency. Its not perfect but I'd say its pretty damn good for a beater with 325,000 miles

While the rack was indeed bad (loose on the inside), bump steer is still there, but straight line tracking is improved significantly.

Yeah it sucks that it still suffers from bump steer, but having the rack done wasn't really that sucky (pretty much ~$400 installed for a reman'd rack).
Straight line tracking has improved and now that I'm about to be driving on the highway about 80% of the time, I guess it makes it worth it that it was fixed even though bump steer still is still there.
I wrote some stuff about it the whole thing here (http://www.chicagonissanclub.net/showpost.php?p=194745&postcount=19).
Just find it unusual that not many people find the steering/suspension to be not normal.

if you have an abs actuator, then u have abs....nissan doesnt just put in a $1500 part and run lines, to not install a plug and play computer. thats just stupid.
your abs light was probably on because one of the rear sensors gave out. the light burned out, you probably still have a code for a sensor or something else. that disabled your system and now your stuck with no abs.

1. Washed my car & cleaned off some suspension stuff to get rid of that residual winter salt. Then it had to lightly snow on me. :waleed:
2. Noticed that one boot on my newly installed steering rack is torn. Noticed that the other boot is twisted more than a DNA sample. I blame Firestone/the-alignment for that crap. No way would they even do the alignment if they noticed that and twisting the inner tie-rods to align the toe is the only plausible reason why the boot is twisted. Now I know why I was hearing those odd sounds at extreme steering angles. :waleed:
3. Did a trans (full) drain/refill while driving on the expressway. Only saw a little smoke though. Lost maybe 80% fluid. Nothing showed on the dipstick until the 5th quart. :waleed:

No can do. I need my car...plus, only the elite can sell a car when they don't want it anymore without worrying about all the stuff you gotta go through & get another one like nothing ever happened. That's like buying an expensive-ass meal, but after eating it, you don't like it & you just throw away the rest. People like me gotta keep eating that nasty meal-but add something to make it taste a little better!
I think its your head son, the day I drove your car it was fine...
I was thinkin man, we never went on the expressway. Drive it on the expressway without holding the wheel and you'll see what I mean. Maybe it's a speed thing. New rack stiffened it up initially but now it seems like that was just burn-in.
Just feels like I'm on a boat sometimes. Wind & trucks literally push me sideways when driving, going over bumps fast pushes me sideways momentarily causing a sudden jerk, and it clunks like there's no tomorrow.
The good thing (and bad if you think about it) is that this stuff gives me a chance to learn cars. And being the type of person I am, I gotta figure stuff out vs. throwing it way to make me happy.

Replaced my steering rack boots yesterday.
Passenger side was torn, driver's side was twisted up. I believe both happened when I got the alignment - the tech probably kept turning the tie rod & the boot wouldn't 'give' where it connects on the rod.
The twisted one(driver's) was probably on its way if it kept getting stretched to full length (extreme right-turns).
And since the rack was put on like 3 weeks ago, needed to do this ASAP or risk ruining the rack. Good thing was no PS fluid in the boots or even dried up residue. Goes to show you though, grease the tie rod where the boot connects!
What made my life difficult was the clamps for where the boot connects on the rack weren't wire, which I could've easily turned a little & snipped off. It was like a thick low-profile metal belt. Didn't have anything to cut it off, so it took me like 45/side sticking stuff in & pulling to get it off.

PS: Out of the many times I've done oil changes on my car at this spot, a cop decides to kick me out of the parking lot. Saying at first he thought I was just changing a flat, but when I told him it was an oil change, he says it's time for me to go & if I open my hood he'd immediately write me a ticket (I had already drained but not refilled). Says flat tire changes are allowed since they're "emergency repairs", but oil isn't because people spill stuff & a "hazmat" incident arises. Yeah ok. I just waited it out 'cause he kept coming around trying to see if I was doing work. Like I'm gonna drive away with no oil in the engine. He also referred to it as "body work". Obviously, he had nothing better to do.

Alley seems more convenient for an oil change than a parking lot if you ask me..
Bah winter makes it look like you have an I35 GXE

But it's an empty-ass parking lot. With all the fart cannons driving crazy through alleys, I'd feel more vulnerable while under the car, especially since the width of the 'street' is narrow. I can understand a Forest Preserve a little though. From now on I guess I'm just doing my oil changes at AutoZone.
I35 GXE...ain't she pretty?

It does sag a bit in the rear... wasn't following your threads much, but are the tires the same overall diameter as the stockers ?
Nothing in the trunk I assume ? SOMETIMES when you raise the front of the car, it will sag and then the front will sit up high until the suspension settles down.
I change my oil @ work, I have a huge skid plate under the car which is kind of impossible to remove w/o a lift. Its for aero dynamics and keeps my oil pan from getting knocked off.
On the topic...
Took my wifes TSX to Delta Sonic today for a "Kiss wash" with a interior detail and a hand wax job. They do an awesome job for the $$. They ran a promo for 15 bux few weeks ago, 5 washes for 15 dollars. They chammy the car down and wash it pretty well even under the car. Then I add the hand wax (free coupon online) and 7 dollar interior clean. They do windows, dash, wash your mats, do a air freshner etc. Wife was very happy with the outcome.
Hand washed my R32 @ work in our detail department, did a underbody scrub also... and conditioned all the leather on the doors, seats, shifter etc etc... car looks mintish.

You go under your car to do the oil change? I just turn the wheel far to the right and dont even need to go under

i just bought some ramps, saves me the trouble of using a jack and jackstands when doing oil changes. Easier and more safe to work with on my gravel parking lot.

we had a tent lol. We used that to install a clutch on the rhd 240sx when it was snowing outside. Notice the garage next to my FD.

Well, my Optima Redtop took a crap on me after nearly 5 years of service without a single warranty replacement. Longest it'll last without starting my car is 3 days before I need a jump. 154.99 cheapest local I found for 1000 CA/800 CCA, anyone know any local places cheaper?

Bought mine from them when I had my Maxima.... it died within 2 years. Yellow top and Red tops. IMHO not worth the extra $$$ over a normal acid battery. I had a Panasonic battery last me 9 years on my Sentra.

My brother switched out the 9 year old battery when the car wouldn't start..... battery clamps where so rusted out that it actually didn't start because of that.
That battery probably would last more... oh and Sentra alternators die too, mine went out after 10 years. OEM Nissan rebuild I put in during my UK Primera redtop SR swap... lasted about 1K miles. I didn't drive the SE-R that much, and it sat most of the time, 5 days after the 12mo warranty went out, alternator went.
Lesson : Nissan cars AND their replacement parts from 2003+ are junk. I went with a used JDM alternator I had laying around from a DET swap I did in my 93 P10 G20.

Yeah man I gotta see what I'm doin. Plus, shorter arms.
I got some ramps, but they're at my parents' house all the way out south.
Never really thought to just reach, actually. Most times when I do an oil change it's more an oil change/inspection/messin around with the suspension under the car.

That doesn't appear to be local, asks for shipping address at check out... and still more expensive than locally sourced optima.
I have a $100 Duracrap right now which was the CHEAPEST and I'd rather pay 54 bucks more and get something better. I am using a Duracrap redtop from idiotzone which I've had to exchange 3 times already since owning it for the last 6 months. The optima I never had to warranty at all. It proved itself to me and 54 bucks extra are definitely worth not having the inconvenience of being late for work, school, family or whatever event you may be heading to especially on a cold winter morning or night. I've seen quite a few Optimas surpass the 7 year mark on many friend's cars. I know a few reasons why this one died prematurely at nearly 5 years and I don't blame it for going. Regardless its more than what this POS will last

curb rash on one of the rims. wheels america charges 130 iirc, and infiniti is charging 140, so i might as well let them do it. i thought i was gonna have to get all 4 rims fixed bc i rashed all of them pretty bad when i was living in nyc.

Got an alignment. Learned I got new parameters out-of-spec now. SAI and Included Angle...as well as my usual Toe.
http://i678.photobucket.com/albums/vv150/ridinwitha35/alignments/rS8001109.jpg?t=1265508058
Also, while I was waiting, this lady came in 'cause she got a flat on one tire. She walked out with 5 new tires. Rep was saying he couldn't replace just the one tire but had to do all four (and her spare...) because she has AWD & it could mess up her transmission if the treads didn't match. That was crazy.

not that crazy. depending on the AWD system you can cause damage by using mismatched tires.though the damage would actually be done to the transfer case not the transmission

BS.
As long as the overall diameter of the tires is the same, she can have Hancook, Yokohama, Goodyear and Pirelli tires all on the same car.
