I just got quoted out on insurance for a bike, came out to;

For a 200CC
430/year @ 20y/o
310/year @ 21y/o

For a 500CC
500/year @ 20y/o
450/year @ 21y/o

I'm looking at a kawasaki 250r or Suzuki gsxr 250r

There do not seem to be many shops around chicago, can someone recommend one?

yea I know we all discussed it, we discussed the bikes, not shops though ^^

I've been at chicagocycle, not much of an option on the 200cc end, better options when going 500+ and only reason im looking at 200cc is because I'm dumb when it comes to driving, i'd prefer not to have the option of going 110+

any 250cc bike will do about 120-130mph. its so small and light that its no problem. if your worried about that, get a scooter.

UGH...NO.... Im not afraid of the speed, I'm afraid of myself and trying to push that speed... and even if i have to go up to a faster bike, so.... I'll get a different :\

Dude, don't get a puss bike, get at least 5-600cc, otherwise you'll regret it. How big are you? I always felt like I was too big for anything less than 1000cc's, and I also felt like the bigger the bike the more stable it was.

i say chicagocycle and banzai in crystal lake. your best bets to find good used bikes.

I thought ChicagoCycle was pretty damn steep on prices when I was looking for a GSXR-600 back in 2004...ChicagoCycle wanted like $9700 for a 2005 while Champion Cycle on Western and Addison wanted 7400 for the same exact bike in the same color, both brand new.

500EX Ninja.
Why ? because its almost as cheap as a 250 Ninja, but it a older generation bike. I am looking for a starter bike for my girl, and I been all over CL for the last few days trying to find something decent.

I am looking for a Ninja 250/500, Honda Rebel 250 or Shadow Sabre.

BTW Suzuki and Honda don't make anything crotch-like, like Kawi does.

600 crotches are EASY to ride, don't limit yourself to 250-500cc.... reason I do that, because my girl is short. And Ninja 250/500 is a small bike, and I think she will be better off on that to start with. She can put her feet down easy at each light etc etc. Once she likes it, we can upgrade to a larger bike.

600s are easy to ride, why ? Because they got NO power on low RPMs so they can be driven smoothly and easy and if you feel like getting your hair on your back raised..... just point the tach PAST 10K RPM.

1000s are animals, savages, insane machines..... I love my 1000 V-Twin monster, it sounds incredible, goes like a mofo.

damnit, the niu classes were booked, their site was just super outdated! Sucks!!

Guys, is it worth it paying 300 for the basic riding classes, or should I sign up for sept classes and do it free, has anyone taken either and can make recommendation?

is there a site relatively close to you? just go when they have classes scheduled and try to get in on standby. i got in on standby at the class in grayslake a couple weeks back. my buddy got in on standby last year at greatlakes.
and if you get in on standby, it's free.

250 is boring, and u will wanna sell it after a week
since u r making big bucks like you said just buy a preowned bike
craigslist has plenty, and private party tax is only $25:0

standby is booked up? NIU courses don't work like that.
" Walk-In Student Procedure: Walk-in students will be selected using a lottery process. Those wanting to enroll as a walk-in will be given a two-part ticket. The individual will keep one half and the other half will be put into a container for a possible drawing on open spots. Once roll call is completed at 6 p.m., tickets will be drawn from the container to fill any vacancies"

http://www.outreach.niu.edu/mcycle/registration.shtml

you're in desplaines? i drove to grayslake from the city man, that was brutal. but crashed at a buddies place in northbrook which was about like halfway. but only reason is bc my little bro had signed up for that class and i was lucky enough to get in on standby.

Yea, the thing i was worried about when going through private is I dont know what to look/listen for.

Other reason I was thinking of 250 is they have good resell value, so I can learn to ride on something and not worry about loosing too much value wise... I've read both,

It's best to start off high so you're not anxious and underestimate the about the bigger engines ... but at the same time there is more to handle.... I've done some research and from what I've read the bigger engines also weigh a bit more but make it up with better handling

She's not lying.

I was 20 years old when I got a quote on a 600cc bike, max full coverage was $10k a year, min coverage was about half of that. Plus living in the city didn't help either. So yeah... The guy almost choked when he told me there was a extra zero at the end. :broke:

Grzesiu
04-22-2009, 10:35 PM
look for damage or signs of damage, scuffs etc
start it up make sure it doesnt smoke, rev it up so there is no crazy engine noise
its not smart to start high, 1000 is not forgiving, 600 is a little more forgiving, but still dangerous

Get a YZF600 or a CB599 for a 1st bike....

Another thing I highly recommend is a ZZR600. I had a bike like that last year that Rob learned how to ride on, and Paul rode.... these guys put like 3K miles on that beast.

If you are interested in a bike, let me know and I will try to go look at it with you. I have had my Honda torn apart this winter into a million pieces.... went through and fixed EVERYTHING that needed to be fixed.

I bought my shit on CL with damage, worn tires etc etc for 2800 bux if I recall.... my bike comes up on CL all the time with less shit on it for 7500 !

Big engine bikes don't handle as nice as the 600s, because the engine and whole bike is WAY beefier and not as nimble due to the weight difference.

636 is one of the nicest 600s around, tons of mods for those things !

More midrange and low end than most 600s because they are larger engine- 636 basically.

My Kawi never had any issues with the trans, you just need to make sure the chain is adjusted right. That is the #1 culprit of bad shifts, 2nd is oil quality/quantity.

If you need any of us to go check it out, shouldn't be a problem. If you need room to store it for a while- shouldn't be a problem over my house after I clean out the garage. I have too many Honda parts laying around.

Kawi are cheap to maintain and are very reliable. Stay away from Suzuki.

4k for a bike with minor damage isn't bad, I really wouldnt consider changing out the farings until I learned how to ride and felt comfortable, as far as mods go I'd only get the sliders, I dont see a need for anything else atm.

Looks like NatCity declined my application for a bike loan at 5k, they don't do lower (which is dumb imo) I'd have to check out what stealership can offer me, if I put 1500 or 2000 down, it shouldn't be too bad

Mike - I have a garage in Lake In The Hills where I store my car parts, I'll prob store the bike in there after I get it during winter, I'll just need to get a stand to keep it off the wheels, thanks for the offer though.... I will prob need to get one of you once I'm ready to test the bike, I'd like someone to 'ride' it to see it shifts correctly, and listen to it at higher revs.

ive read up on the kawi forums about the newer 636's. the 05-06-07's bending the shifting fork if you do beat on them alot. basically have to replace the whole trans, no fixable parts.

ill see whats up. ive always been a fan of that color. looks freakin bad ass.

spoiler = stability at speed. ive got one with no spoiler now and it lifts almost at all speeds.

from what i read and from what was explained to me as i was looking at them, the spoiler makes the helmet cut through the air better, and makes it more stable on your head.

also, this helmet has great venting so summer riding shouldnt be a problem, even with the all black finish i want to get.

No, I owned a ZX6R like that one.... they kept on making that "body style" bike later still and just renamed it ZZR600. I think from 05-08 they made them, pretty dependable bike.

F4i feels similar to the Kawi, they are the same league bike. Honda made the F4i alongside the RR, just like Kawi made the ZZR600 along side the ZX6R.

I think the Kawi might have more power ? but it feels a bit bigger and more relaxed.

F4i=i=fuel injected, where the kawi is not, fuel injcted=easier and cheaper to maintain in the long run
you can get a newer bodied bike for 4400$
actually my friend can probably sell you his 2003 CBR for around 5 or less (yellow one in attached pics), runs strong, most of the guys that ride saw it in action, plus it already has all the mods one might need on a bike, including leo vince sbk titanium pipe

it has the integrated tail light, flush mounts, smoke screen, pipe (around $500 when it was new) he has a front sprocket if you want to upgrade, new rear tire(michelin pp), front tire could be replaced soon
other than that it is a yellow metallic paint(only made for 1 year), so it looks real sharp in the sun, never dropped or wrecked
basically it has all the mods you would want to do on a bike when you get it, and mods for the bikes are not cheap

Ok, i just talked to him, he can get you a lid, but no jacket, he wants to keep his jacket since it is a $400 one (and he is a built so it probably would be to small for you anyway).
If you are interested let me know or pm me your email and I will get him to send you better pics.
Also he is not desperate to sell it, since there is nothing wrong with this bike and he is looking for a replacement R1. CBR1kRR or ZX10R. In other words he is pretty firm on the price because of the condition of the bike. :spend:

Guy I know went riding with us today, he had his 650 up to around 130. If my GF was taller, finding a bike that would suit her would be much easier. I'm PWND by the seat height.

Looking at a XL883 for her.... Ninja 250R, Yamaha V-Star 650, Suzuki M50. Ninja 250 is standing out the most, but I think she will be more comfy with a cruiser. Choices..... fuck me silly.

Storage, the association expects me to put a bike and my car on one parking spot without hanging off the parking spot (which is not possible) I can take my chances and put the bike on it's own spot but it'll get towed the following evening, hopefully by or beging of July I'll have a public storage garage right next to my place to store it there

Only get 1 parking spot? That sucks!

it is doable, bike does not take much space, so if the parking space can take a SUV, it can fit a car and a bike
just get a bike cover for it and you are set

well 1 sticker per household member

I've checked, car will hang off if I want to get both on one spot (which either means ticket or tow), remember my car is dropped so I cant go up all the way to the concrete

put the bike in front of the car

Cant park the car backwards (ticket or tow)

there's about 1.5ft between car and the concrete if I park forwards, it will BARLEY fit there + then need to figure out how to get out of there.

Other idea Mike had was park the bike on the other side of the concrete, cant will get a ticket for that... I think there's 2 people with bikes here and they dont have cars they did at one point or multiple and got rid of them which gave them a sticker(I talked to them) and then they decided to park together on 1 spot (they are across the property from me.)

Here is a GREAT idea ! Buy yourself a bad ass VW hatchback, and your car AND 2 bikes will fit in the parking spot ;)

I've lived in a condo, I know they are a bunch of lame ass jews.

06-15-2009, 10:20 AM
Well part of the "downgrade" with car I was hoping it will be shorter so I can fit a bike and car on one spot... the tiny cars are just that.. tiny... i sometimes need a big trunk for moving equipment

and yes, they are jews... they're trying to get every bit of $ they can $190 for a fucking tow...

DasTeknoViking

Some "small" cars are bigger than you expect. You should see the size of my trunk, I can stack up 2 50" Panasonic plasmas in the boxes inside the trunk and drive my car home. I've hauled 1 home and had enough room for another one. I'm more comfortable driving my Golf than my Maxima, its deff got a much more "high end" ride quality.

But I hear ya with the parking, no sense buying a car or a bike if you got no room to store it anywhere. In my case I got a garage for storage.

have any stairs to get into your place? if not then just pull the bike into the living room

kerosene
06-15-2009, 11:02 AM
Mike, I know they are, I have to haul server and parts sometimes so it's not as much height but width.

I live in a(n) apartment... 2nd floor... clears everything up?

That's why I see it worth it getting the garage that's by me for 40/mth... I might be able to split it with my bud and store his minicooper in there and his bike (once he gets one)

that bike looks aggressive as hell, but it writes that the bike is in a class of its own for quality to price....is that accurate? i mean for 9200 smackers I would never expect anything less than top quality on a bike..

Meh I looked at the RSV.... it looks very much like a RC from the front, and has less power than *MY* RC.

Cool looking bike, but short on the WOW factor.

No, I'm not a Harley kinda guy.

I would like something more comfy, after watching a show on hiking n shit in Montana, I would love to go on a bike ride down to the rockies !

I seen a show on TV, GL1800 rider keeping up down some very twisty roads with some crotches. If you push it hard enough, it will do it.

Just look at the comfort.........seriously, Gregs 500 mile road trip from KY he just did on a crotch must feel VERY bad on his whole body. Where on this thing you can cruise in comfort at almost any speed.

If I wanted something BMWish.... I would get a Concours 14 by Kawasaki.

They had 2 Gl's at chicago cycle, tbh feels like too much of a car... when I look at bike I look at it moreso roughing out... not a bike with an airbag.

he kawasaki is touring isnt it?

DasTeknoViking
06-21-2009, 12:28 AM
Concours 14 is a ZX14 Ninja made into a sport touring bike. Its got the 1400cc I4 which has been lightly detuned.

Remote key start, tire pressure monitors, hard saddle bags, electric windshield adjustment, on board computer. Speed limited to 170 but thats enough for a "cruiser".

You told me you won't get a bike this year.... so why troll ? I got your PM.

I put off buying a bike for a long time since 2001/02 after my last bike I flipped and sold. Each year I was like, I will get one, I will get one.... and finally when my buddy Daniel said hes got a bike he wants to sell. I said fuck it and got it. After 6 years of no riding, I saddled up the kawi and never looked back. Since last year I have owned 3 bikes.

Find your nuts, you won't regret it. My GF loves the ride !

Store the bike at someones house, someone whos near by so you can just go hop in your car and go for a ride. Don't let your shitty housing problem stop you from having fun on 2 wheels.
