The Tire Thread- Reviews/Experiences

By request, this thread has been made to educate, and inform people of many different brands out there. We have all had different sets of tires, and experiences both good and bad with tires. It is up to the individual to make up their own mind.

Please post the following specs, and review of each tire. In my experiences I have noticed that size matters in tire performance.

Brand:
Size:
Road Noise: Scale (1-5) 1= Quiet / 5 = Noisy
Miles driven on them:
Driving style: (Spirited/Cruising)
Type of tire: All Season/Summer Only/Winter Tire

Mr Grey has been part of at least 1 good deal.
Brand: Falken Azenis 615
Size: 225/45/17
Road Noise Scale: 3
Miles driven on them: 5,000
Driving style: Spirited
Type of tire: Summer Only

Additional Comments: I had these for about a month last year, and it's def one of the stickiest tires I have owned. It is a pure performance oriented tire. The sidewall is pretty stiff...easily noticed from my CDs skipping but that might have been reduced with less tire pressure. They were a lil noisy on concrete but quiet in asphalt. Frankly I bought them to carve up some backroads and held their own VERY well. When I was purchasing them I read reviews of them lasting only 15k, and these tires being the closest thing to competition rubber for the streets. I would recommend them because they cost me $109 each vs $145+ for every other summer only tire...keep in mind they're stiff.

Kumho Ecsta ASX
225/50/17
road noise is good i guess : 2
miles driven: 20-30K
Driving Style: spirited
Type: all season
price : $71 ea. from TireRack

bought them in late 07 early 08, and just now they are getting down to wear bars, for price won't find anything better. they provide really good traction in wet or dry. good enough for winter in Chicago when they clean streets, but would not recommended for trips where there will be snow. Sideways traction in snow is horrible

Sidewall might be too soft for some people @ 30 Psi but ride is smoother(no passengers), but when up to 34 handle very nicely and responsive.

Brand: Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
Size: 225/45/17
Road Noise: 2
Miles driven on them: 10K
Driving style: Mixed
Type of tire: Summer

Incredible grip and longevity. Pricey though.

Brand: Toyo T1R
Size: 245/40/18
Road Noise: 2
Miles driven on them: 5K
Driving style: Mixed
Type of tire: Summer

Take all the good things of the GS-D3 and kick 'em up a notch. In addition, they're cheaper.

Brand :Falken Azenis RT615
Size :225-40-18
Road Noise :1 VERY noisy when they get worn out
Miles driven on : 15K miles
Driving style : highways
Type of tire : Max Performance Summer.

Its a good sticky tire when new, but once it gets over half worn it starts to get very noisy and grip tends to slowly go away. Not too good in the rain due to its tread design, and don't be caught in the snow with these on or you are dead meat. Good AutoX tire.

Brand : Toyo Proxes4
Size : 225-40-18
Road Noise : 8
Miles driven on : 10K miles
Driving style : Aggressive mixed driving
Type of tire : All season.

Very good tire at a very good price, its got VERY good traction in the snow and in the wet. So good I don't feel the need for any kinda snow tire. Its also a very quiet tire and its very pothole proof. I have cracked a rim and thats when the tire got a bubble. Compared to Kumhos that bubble over pebbles on the road, these are excellent buy.

Brand : Pirelli P-Zero
Size : 225-40-18
Road noise : 2
Miles driven : 5K miles
Driving style : mixed but mostly highways
Type of tire : Ultra High Performance All Season.

Very bad tire, It came with my car and had plenty of tread life left.... traction in the snow was just pathetic. One of the tires developed a huge lump on the INSIDE and almost blew out on me. No traction in the rain, and was VERY noisy. I recomend you keep clear of Pirelli tires.

Brand : Michelin Exalto M/S XGT
Size : 205-60-15
Road noise : 10
Miles on tires : 10K
Driving style : City
Type of tire : All Season

I bought these for my moms car to replace her old, dried up Falken Ziex 512s that where on there for only 20K miles. These tires according to my mom are nothing like the car has ever had, they are simply the best. I got them for her last year before Xmas and she says they rock in the snow, and I have driven the car (2000 Altima) many times and the tires are quiet, and provide plenty of traction in both rain, snow. Kinda pricey, but considering the last set of tires only lasted 20K before it dry rotted out.... Michelins are quality bar none.

mike, 2 things, first i think you're mixing up the noise scale.
second, about the kumho tires and bubles, you may have had bad experience with some but ASX i have are very solid, i do have one bubble but thats from one huge pothole, i thought my wheel was going to fall of, and i will be checking my wheel bearing b/c of that

that leads me to the question how can wheel bearing be checked

I have never put Kumhos on ANY car I've owned.... I've had many diff brands over the years. I seen enough failures in the past on my friends cars all the time... Ecsta 711/2 was just complete rubbish.

I didn't see the scale... I rated 1 as noisy and 10 quiet as a sin. Sorry no Edit button.

lol " you wrote it now back it up" always comes to mind when someone wants to edit something.

Brand : Yokohama Avids
Size : 205-60-15
Road noise : 1.5
Miles on tires : 25k
Driving style : City/highway
Type of tire : All Season

These were my first set of tires i ever bought for a car, well i actually got it used from Ty back when his 4th gen was an auto. But none the less, it was is a great tire. still racking up the miles on it. i think its about 30-40% now with my dad. Great all around tire, no problems in light snow, never had a spin out or much wheel spin at all. Price was great used or new. Great budget tire. I'm sure most can make 60k if not more on these. Drove great thru snow storms in michigan.

everyone always has their own opinions...

Mine are as follows:

Goodyear (any model) HATE THEM.. won't use them on purpose (they've come on a few cars I bought but I got rid of them FAST)

Kuhmo: never used them (not even the race rCompounds) so no opinion

Michelin: no thanks, they dry rot too quickly and are overpriced IMHO

Falken: Couldn't stand the 512s I had at one point (hated them so much I sold them with less than 1000 miles of use) ...had Falken Azenis too for about 2 months and sold them fast too.. don't see myself buying Falken again anytime soon.

Bridgestone: Had very good experiences with several models

BFG: Used to use their R1 Rcompounds and loved them, haven't tried the new Rcompounds yet. Had their street tires ONCE and had problems with them not holding a bead and I got rid of them and never tried another set for the street after that.

Pirelli: Had them on my porsche from the factory.. noisy as hell after 10k miles but they worked.. too expensive for me to buy again though.. didnt' like how they dry rotted after 3 years old.

TOYO: Really love the Toyo RA1 for track use and went through about 7 sets last year.

and that's all I can think of right now
